Spa Secrets Your Girlfriend Wont Tell You:

  • THE BRAZILLIAN WAX:
Guys love the look of this "no-hair-anywhere" bikini wax but few could actually watch the process without getting queasy. Aestheticians train with a video called "Nooks, Crannies and Crevices: The Whole Ball of Wax" which contains hair wrenching close-ups that would make Jenna Jameson nervous. A Brazilian Wax is a little like childbirth: everyone says it is a miracle, but nobody really wants to watch it happen. It's just easier to let guys keep thinking it involves beautiful technicians and a pillow fight.
    Price: $75+ Time: 30 min- 1 hour
  • PERMANENT MAKEUP:
Every woman wants to be able to dive into a pool and surface without looking like Alice Cooper or kiss a guy without leaving a lipstick smear. Unfortunately, if we go to bed looking like Pamela Lee we usually wake up looking like Tammy Faye. The naked truth about make-up is that it is a temporary fix, which is why so many women are turning to eyebrow, eye liner and lip tattoos. The process, which involves needles and dye, takes 2-4 hours for each session and lasts several years. Most areas can be done in 1-2 sessions, but large full lips can take more. Brows typically cost around $400, eyeliner $200-$400, depending on whether you do upper lid, lower lid or both and lips range from $400-$900 depending on whether you line or fill the lips completely. The key is to find a really good cosmetic artist so you don't end up looking like Boy George. When done well, permanent makeup looks completely natural, so your guy may never guess your secret!

Spa Secrets Your Girlfriend Wishes You Knew:

  • MANI/PEDI: Let's face it, most guys idea of a nail care involves a pocketknife and a golf tee. Still  they hope to run their gorilla-hands over some pretty sensitive girl-places. And what sensible woman wants to play footsies with a guy that has Freddy Krueger feet? A manly man-i-cure and pedicure costs around $75, takes about an hour and includes a natural nail buffing, instead of polish. As a bonus, the guy gets to enjoy the pedicure on a massaging throne-like chair while a beautiful nail technician bows before him, massaging, trimming and buffing his royal feet.
  • BACK FACIAL: If you are one of the lucky guys who has escaped the embarrassing curse of back hair, you probably feel superior when you think of those poor hairy schmucks that have to deal with the pain and expense of waxing. Before you get too smug, you may want to know what's behind you. Exercise, sweat and chaffing clothing often leave guys with acne, black heads and dry scaly backs. A back facial, which costs about $100 and takes one hour, will give your neglected back the attention it craves and improve your chances of getting spooned later.

Memorable Moments in Scottsdale History

As the Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, we look back at what happened this month in Scottsdale history.
In 1987, 1.67 million visitors traveled to Scottsdale. These visitors' total direct expenditures were more than $397 million. Today, Scottsdale's 7.5 million tourists have an economic impact of $3.1 billion annually. Tourists generate almost 25 cents of every $1 the city receives in privilege taxes, which equates to $36.1 million.
With the money generated by tourism, the City could purchase two million library books, build seven community parks, or hire 636 new police officers. Scottsdale's property taxes also are 36 percent lower than in other Valley cities in part because of the money generated by visitors.

Labor Day Picnic's Perfect Peach Cobbler

Ingredients:

12 sliced peaches
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup light brown sugar
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
2 teaspoons cornstarch
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
Pinch salt

Topping:

2 cups flour
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
3/4 cups cold butter, cut into small bits
1/2 cup boiling water
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees and grease a 4 quart baking dish. Toss the peaches with the 1/4 sugar, 1/4 brown sugar, lemon juice, cornstarch, 2 teaspoons vanilla, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg, and pinch salt in the baking dish. Bake for 10 minutes. While the peaches bake, sift together the flours, sugars, cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg. Blend in the butter until the mixture resembles a coarse meal. Right before the peaches are finished baking, add the water and vanilla and mix until just moistened. Drop the topping over the peaches evenly. Bake for 25 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown. Serve warm or at room temperature. (Makes 8 servings)
