LAMAR BLOCK PARTY G.A.I.N.S SUPPORT

The day may have started out with a downpour but the record rainfall was not enough to dampen the spirits of those who attended the First Annual Lamar "Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods" block party.

Some neighbors came because they got one of 300 hand-delivered invitations, others because they saw the story in the Scottsdale Republic. Some just pulled into the parking lot to see what was going on. A network news crew even showed up with a reporter and a news van. The reporter was looking for a story on neighborhood crime. The only problem was, apparently we have a very safe neighborhood.

She found balloons, a moon bounce, inflatable obstacle and bungee course, tasty treats from local restaurants and free massages. She found representatives from the police, K-9 & fire departments a fire truck and free gifts from local businesses. She even found young Mom's exchanging tips and kids making new friends. What she couldn't find was a single person who had a neighborhood crime story. As she walked away she said to her cameraman, "Let's go; there's no story here." We think she may have missed the point.

G.A.I.N., a statewide program, is not just for crime-ridden neighborhoods. It was designed to promote the concept that neighborhoods are safer when people know and watch out for each other. Neighbors, who came, found local businesses like, Chain Reaction who hosted the kid's events without cost, even though Saturday is their "money" day. They found restaurants like Malee's Thai Bistro, El Torito and Paradise Bakery, who gave away gallons of delicious soup, chips & salsa and freshly baked cookies.

They found companies like Best Buy and LA Fitness, who gave away free T-shirts and tours of The Geek Squad car. Most of all, they found new friends, a sense of community and some good old fashioned fun. That may not be newsworthy, but we still think it is a pretty good story.
We will be telling it again next year, and we hope you will plan to join us!

JEWLRY BY LANI: JUST IN TIME FOR THE HOLIDAYS!

Lani was introduced to beading in April 2000. Immediately she knew she had found her passion. With a studio in her home, she opened up the doors to her design jewelry business, appropriately named "Custom Jewelry By Lani".

The base of her jewelry is Swarovski Austrian Crystal. She adds a rainbow of sparkling colors with faceted gemstones, pearls, and unique findings. Each design is colorful and different. In addition, each piece has her signature tag on it to assure you it is an original.

When asked what inspires her, Lani answered, "All the colors! When I sit down to design a piece of jewelry I start with the color, adding an assortment of shapes for dimension and textures to enhance the effect the design has on the eye".

A selection of Jewelry By Lani is now available in The Lamar Spa Boutique. Prices start around $40 for earrings and necklaces are under $200.

SCOTTSDALE AMONG SITES
FOR ECO-FRIENDLY HOTELS

Starwood will combine luxury accommodations and eco-friendly building in a new global line of hotels, including one in Scottsdale. To be called "1" Hotel and Residences, the concept is a first combining environmentally sustainable architecture and interior design with high-quality service and comfort, said Chief Executive Barry Sternlicht.

"While some hotel brands pay lip service to the environment by asking guests to reuse towels, and adding plants to a lobby, "1" is not using eco-friendly jargon simply as a marketing tool," Sternlicht said in a statement. "Our intention with "1" is to build hotels and residences that are truly green and minimize their impact on their environment." The first international "1" hotel will be in Paris. Within the next 12 months, The Scottsdale project is planned for a site at Scottsdale Waterfront at Marshall Way and Via Solari. (The Business Journal of Phoenix, Oct. 18)

Companies with more than 25 employees are invited to submit applications, but their employees do the actual voting. Watch for an upcoming article, featuring The Lamar and other finalists in The Business Journal and keep your fingers crossed for us. We think our spa is a great place to work, but an award would be kind of nice too!

Our first LIVE AT THE LAMAR concert is November 1st from 7-10 PM featuring piano composer, Jeffery Ewald. A recent Valley transplant from upstate NY, Jeffrey's musical Experiences are diverse. They include performing his original meditative piano concerts at Kriplau Yoga Center's, yoga classes & healing retreats. He also provided opening ceremony music for Burmese Monk & Cealo, among others. Jeff is currently working on a CD of original meditative music.

The Live at The Lamar concert is free with purchase of any spa service. A limited number of $30 facility passes may be available, at show time, based on availability. Spa services and facility passes will include all-day use of the steam room, sauna, swimming pool, whirlpool, robes, towels lockers, tropical fruit and herbal tea bar.

The Live at The Lamar series will continue on the first Wed of every month.
