EMMY NOMINATED STYLIST & MAKE UP ARTIST, DANTON, TO SHARE EVERYDAY MAKEUP SECRETS

What do Stevie Nicks, Meg Ryan, Shirly Mac Laine and Jimmy Carter all have in common? Each has trusted their faces and locks to the skillful hands of Danton before stepping into the spotlight. A Scottsdale native, Danton’s career took a giant step forward in 1981 when Stevie Nicks noticed one of his salon clients in the Fleetwood Mac audience. Intrigued by the fans stylized braided do, Stevie sent a crew-member to find out who had done her hair and Danton’s star studded client list was born. After touring with Stevie, Danton moved to New York, where he landed the coveted position of Director of Make Up and Education at the world famous Christine Valmy Makeup Design School. In 1990, Danton authored a best selling beauty book “It Only Looks Like Magic” which launched a decade of workshops for companies like Mary Kay and John Robert Powers and appearances on shows like Oprah. Though surrounded by stars, Danton never lost his passion for coaxing the glamour out of everyday woman. On the topic, Danton says, “ Stars usually have people around them telling them they’re great and beautiful all the time. Ordinary women don’t. It makes me feel good if I can teach them a few things that will make them feel more beautiful”.

As Salon Lamar’s new Artistic Director, Danton is now available to give Lamar guests the star treatment. Call (480) 945-7066 to book a consultation with Danton to discuss how cut, color and makeup can bring your hidden beauty into focus.

Danton will be hosting one of his inspirational make over seminars this spring  at The Lamar. Attendees will be treated to an entertaining and information packed workshop where they can learn his trademark makeup techniques. Women are encouraged to bring their favorite makeup, and be ready to find their inner starlet. Watch for details in next month’s Club Lamar Star.

CORPORATE PLANNERS RANK SCOTTSDALE AS TOP DESTINATION

According to a recent study, Scottsdale was ranked as the fifth most popular destination for corporate meetings held in the past three years, behind Las Vegas, Orlando, Chicago and Atlanta. Scottsdale fared even better in terms of major meetings planned for the next three years, ranking fourth. Metropoll Xll, a brand image/marketing study conducted among a national sample of meeting and convention decision makers, covers 40 major destinations in North America. “The study shows that meeting planners recognize Scottsdale as a top-tier destination,” said Dan Tavrytzky, vice president of sales and services at the Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Our variety of hotels and resorts provide unique amenities conducive to productive meetings, and the business from these groups is helping to create a better economy for Scottsdale.” Through this research, the Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau continues to find more efficient ways to market Scottsdale as a world-class meetings destination and reach key planners with their messages. Everything – from where advertising is placed to what messages are used – is determined in part by the findings of this research. GET A BRAZILIAN WAX AT THE LAMAR FOR JUST $50*

Bikini season is here and our phones have been ringing off the hook with one question: “Does The Lamar do Brazilian waxing?” The answer is yes! A Brazilian wax is a bikini wax that leaves your bikini area completely bare. The process takes less than half an hour and costs $65 for the first visit. *Maintenance visits, within 30 days, are just $50, including all day use of the spa’s steam room, sauna, swimming pool, whirlpool, private changing cabanas with robes, towels, sandals & tropical fruit and tea bar.

While any waxing can cause some discomfort, because the entire hair and root is removed, results can last quite a wile, depending on how quickly your hair grows back. Devotes of Brazilian waxing say the clean look and feel, never having to worry about razor bumps or burns from shaving, and ability to wear any swimsuit or lingerie make the minimal temporary discomfort well worth it. If you dare to go bare, grab your teeny bikini and call The Lamar to book your Brazilian wax today.

IN PURSUIT OF RELIEF

By any measure, the level of stress in contemporary life has never been higher. It is not surprising then that spa-going has become an increasingly popular recreational activity for Americans on vacation seeking relief. For a growing number, it now represents the primary purpose of a vacation. This is particularly true for affluent leisure travelers (those with an annual household income over $150,000, or the top seven percent of all households defined by annual income). As revealed in the 2006 Portrait Of Affluent Travelers™, almost half of all affluent leisure travelers visited a spa at a luxury hotel or resort at least once during the previous year. The underlying motivation for a particularly devout group of spa-goers derives from a deeper personal commitment to alter and/or enhance one's life through the transformation of body, mind and spirit. These are adults who have visited a "destination spa" during the previous year (12 percent of all affluent leisure travelers). Contrary to what you might conclude from the endless stream of articles in the press about increasingly exotic spa treatments, the most popular spa treatment is an old favorite: massage. Pedicures and facials follow. (Yesawich, Pepperdine, Brown and Russell Market Intelligence eNewsletter February 2007)

NEIGHBORHOOD

SOUTH SCOTTSDALE INVESTMENT REACHES $3.1 BILLION MILESTONE

City of Scottsdale Economic Vitality staff conducts a semi-annual assessment of the reinvestment activity in the southern portion of Scottsdale. The research provided information on a number of positive trends in this area, as evidenced by the following key findings. The total new reinvestment in Scottsdale south of Chaparral Road that has occurred or has been announced since the start of 2003 is approximately $3.13 billion. Six months ago, this figure was $2.64 billion, and 12 months ago it was $2.39 billion. Of the total investment in South Scottsdale projects, 85 percent is from private investment with only 15 percent coming from public investment. In addition, south Scottsdale has seen 3,360 new residential units either built, in process or planned since January 2003 (not including condo conversions). The demographics of the area also are changing, including growth in both population and median income levels, and a drop in median age (from 41.5 in 2000 to an estimated 39.9 today), which are reflecting the influx of new and younger families to this area. Data also indicates improvements in quality of life categories, such as a lower crime rate and higher educational test scores. (Scottsdale Update - Development Focus, March 5)

Do It Beautifully

The Full Translation

When I was growing up in Mt. Vernon, NY, my best friend, Luisa, lived around the block from me.  We would take turns meeting at each other’s houses to play or do homework, usually some combination of both.  Over Luisa’s house, a regular routine would be to sneak into the kitchen’s walk-in pantry and head for the big jar filled with the most scrumptious cookies made by Grandma Luisa, after whom my friend was named. Sometimes the cookies would still be warm, having been added to the jar straight from the oven.  They were round like a biscuit but spongy on the inside, and lightly brown on the outside with a dusting of confectioners’ sugar.   Boy, were they good!

Years later, I asked Luisa if her grandmother would be willing to share the recipe.  To my delight she agreed and as Grandma Luisa spoke, Luisa translated from Italian, word for word, over the phone.  After listing the ingredients, she came to the directions for mixing the dough.  She paused and I could tell she was smiling and trying to determine how to translate this part.  “What did she say?” I asked eagerly.  “She said to break the eggs beautifully.”

I comprehended the meaning and so that is exactly what I wrote down: Break the eggs beautifully.  I wanted to see those words every time I made the recipe to remind me that it was not just about the right mix of butter, sugar, and flour.  I was to make the cookies with my heart.

What You Put Into it Grandma Luisa’s experience had taught her that being confident, having pride in what she was doing, and putting some feeling into it made the discernable difference.  This did not mean she couldn’t work fast or had to have a monk’s meditative concentration, but she did know something about mindfulness.  She knew that taking care to do it right involves the energy you put into a task as much as it does skill.

Make Your Dish A Feast

This week, practice being present to the task at hand.  Notice how your intention impacts the “dish you serve”.  Whether the dish is a conversation, a report, or an actual meal, remember to add that intangible ingredient that makes a tangible difference.  Do it beautifully.
